Topic for Class: having a web presence & developing your identity (Artist Statements and Bios)

Assignment (for next class): Register and develop a blog and read handouts by Solnit, Rebecca. “Open Door” and “The Blue of Distance” (1st) from A Field Guide to Getting Lost. New York: Penguin Books, 2005. Also – bring your resume (whatever you have) to next class, as well as some examples of your work (see handout). 

  

Wednesday, May 20th 

Due: 

  • Creative journal response to readings from Field Guide to Getting Lost – turn in copy in class

Show & Tell: Your Art! 

Topic for Class: Artist Statements and Bios

Topic for Class: Thinking about and (Re)viewing Art 

Assignment (for next class):  Read “Deconstructing Media: Analyzing an Image” (pp. 32-44) and “Swoosh!” (pp.143-146) from Mims, Joan T. and Elizabeth M. Nollen (2006). Mirror on America: Short Essays and Images from Popular Culture. Boston, MA: Bedford/St. Martins.

  • Locate any print image/graphic design (with minimum or no text) that you are particularly drawn to and bring to class; be prepared to discuss what it is about the image/graphic design that appeals to you and/or why it caught your attention.

Topic for Class: “Reading” Images / Visual Literacy & Listening

Assignment (for next class):  Read Schwendener, Martha. “What Crisis? Some Promising Futures for Art Criticism,” Village Voice, January 7, 2009 and Art Criticism handouts (“The Skills of Art Criticism” and “Guidelines”); Keep checking out other artist web sites (for layout/design and the way they structure everything).

  • Be prepared to show one or two artist websites that you really liked and discuss how their site is organized well. 
  • Bring a sample “review” to class for discussion & be prepared to discuss what works well, what doesn’t, and why. 
  • Journal response (two due anytime this week)

Topic for Class: Skills of Art Criticism 

Assignment (for next class): Critical Evaluation draft – Due Monday, June 8th; have artist, exhibit, or collection of works identified by next class; Revise artist and bio statement.

  • Have Critical Evaluation artist, exhibit, or collection identified.

Topic for Class: Selling Art Online / “Product” descriptions

Assignment (for next class): Locate at least three possible (reputable) places to sell art online (within your medium/genre) that is NOT directly through the artist’s website or an established institutional one (i.e. gallery, artist’s collective, etc.). Come into class with the website address, a few sample pieces from each site, and be prepared to discuss what works well and what doesn’t about the layout and design of the site, how effectively the artwork is displayed, and how well descriptions are written; continue working on Critical Evaluation draft; write a “product” description

Assignment (for next class):  Brainstorm Possible Grant Ideas; revise project outline and budget; continue working on Critical Evaluation project; work on getting final portfolio completed (most of your work should already be on your blog, but now is a good time to start editing, revising, and polishing your site).

Topic for Class: Translating Your Work into Other Genres

Assignment (for next class): locate three possible places to which you could apply for a grant (and summarize what they are asking for in a proposal); begin working on translation project (see handout); Critical Evaluation final due next Monday.
